What Is a 5050 SMD LED?

“5050” identifies the nominal 5.0 × 5.0 mm package format. It does not, by itself, define the LED’s color, wavelength, power, channel count or operating voltage. Leienda’s 5050 range includes single-color and multi-channel packages, while custom board integration extends selected packages into project-specific light-source assemblies.

Choose the package by its actual optical, electrical and mechanical specification—not by footprint alone.

Reference Specifications from Selected 5050 Packages

Catalog example Listed power Listed drive current Listed viewing angle
Flat red / near-infrared 5050 0.2 W 20 mA × 3 120°
Flat RGB 5050 0.2 W or 0.5 W 20 mA × 3 or 50 mA × 3 120°
Domed RGB 5050 0.2 W or 0.5 W 20 mA × 3 or 50 mA × 3 90°
Non-IC RGBW 5050 0.2 W or 0.5 W 20 mA × 4 or 50 mA × 4 120°

These are selected catalog references, not universal ratings for every 5050 LED. Confirm the exact part, channel data, forward-voltage conditions and drawing before design approval.

Choose the Package Before You Design the System

Avoid common integration issues by reviewing the mechanical and electrical reality of the LED package early in the design cycle.

A 5050 footprint does not guarantee the same electrical behavior.

Single-color, RGB and RGBW parts have different channel arrangements. Start with the actual package drawing and channel data before choosing a driver or board layout.

The right wavelength is more specific than the package name.

For red and near-infrared projects, compare the emitter combination and each channel’s operating conditions against the equipment requirement.

A package-level choice can create board-level constraints.

Higher-power and multi-channel designs need coordinated drive, layout and thermal review. Leienda’s package and PCB/FPC/PCBA scope allows these decisions to be discussed together.

Configuration range

Compare single-color, red / near-infrared, RGB and RGBW 5050 directions instead of treating every 5050 package as interchangeable.

Construction choices

Flat, domed and ceramic examples give engineering teams different optical or package-construction starting points, subject to each part’s drawing and specifications.

Package-to-board coordination

When the project needs more than a loose LED package, Leienda can discuss the corresponding PCB, FPC or PCBA light-source assembly.

5050 LED Selection Guide

What does “5050” tell me about an LED?
It describes the nominal package footprint, not a complete electrical or optical specification. Compare color or wavelength, channel count, current, forward voltage, viewing angle, package construction and the actual drawing.
When should I compare RGB with RGBW?
RGB uses red, green and blue channels for color mixing. RGBW adds a dedicated white channel. The better fit depends on the required white output, control design and board interface—not on the package name alone.
Is a 5050 LED itself waterproof?
Do not assign an IP rating to a loose LED package based on its 5050 format. Waterproofing belongs to the finished strip, board or enclosure design and must be validated at that assembly level.
Can I connect a bare 5050 LED directly to a 24 V supply?
A 24 V label normally describes a finished lighting circuit or assembly, not the bare LED package. The circuit still needs an appropriate current-control method, channel design and compatible driver. Review the complete board or module schematic before selecting the power supply.
What changes with a higher-power ceramic 5050 package?
The package construction is only one part of the thermal path. Evaluate the operating current, board material, mounting arrangement and heat removal in the finished assembly using the selected part’s actual specifications.
What should be confirmed before requesting a 5050 LED configuration?
Identify the required color or wavelength, package type, channel control, expected operating conditions and whether the deliverable is a loose LED or an assembled PCB, FPC or PCBA light source. A drawing or circuit requirement helps align the package with the finished design.
